Fact: A marrow transplant can cure up to 70 blood diseases including sickle cell anemia, leukemia, certain cancers, etc. Fact: The bottom line is that many minorities are dying unnecessarily because people just do not know of the need! Fact: You can help by registering to become a marrow donor if you are ages 18 to 60. Fact: Some folks who can't give blood through the Red Cross, may be eligible to register for the National Marrow Donor Program. Fact: If you match a searching patient, you can frequently donate your marrow right from your bloodstream! |
Fact: The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) maintains the largest, diverse donor Registry in the world. 4 million Americans are on the Registry and out of that number 3.5 million are Caucasian. Fact: A transplant requires matching tissue types between patient and donor. Because tissue type is inherited, the best chance of matching is with a brother or sister. Fact: The next best chance for a marrow match is with your ethnicity. Fact: 75 percent of patients do not have a donor in their family. |
